「一つの孤独な生涯」ウィリアム・バークレー

　ウィリアム・バークレーの「希望と信頼に生きるウィリアム・バークレーの一日一章」（柳生直行
訳　ヨルダン社刊）の１２月２５日には「一つの孤独な生涯」という小さな物語が紹介されている。
　クリスマスにふさわしい物語であると思い、ここに紹介することとしよう。

ひとりの孤独な生涯

彼は、世に知られぬ小さな村のユダヤの人の家に生まれた。
母親は、貧しい田舎の人であった。
彼が育ったところも、世に知られぬ別の小さな村であった。
彼は30才になるまで大工として働いた。
それから、旅から旅の説教者として3年を過ごした。
一冊の本も書かず、自分の事務所も持たず、自分の家も持っていなかった。
彼は、自分の生まれた村から200マイル以上出たことはなく、
偉人と言われる有名人にはつきものの「業績」を残したこともなかった。
彼は、人に見せる紹介状を持たず、自分を見てもらうことがただひとつの頼りであった。
彼は、旅をしてまわり、病人をいやし、足なえを歩かせ、盲人の目を開き、神の愛を説いた。
ほどなく、この世の権力者たちは彼に敵対しはじめ、世間もそれに同調した。
彼の友人たちは、みな逃げ去った。
彼は裏切られ、敵の手に渡され、裁判にかけられ、ののしられ、唾をかけられ、殴られ、引きずり回
された。
彼は十字架に釘づけにされ、二人の犯罪人の間に、その十字架は立てられた。
彼がまさに死につつある時、処刑者たちは彼の地上における唯一の財産、すなわち彼の上着をくじで
引いていた。
彼が死ぬと、その死体は十字架から下ろされ、借り物の墓に横たえられた。
ある友人からの、せめてものはなむけであった。

長い１９の世紀が過ぎていった。
今日、彼は、人間の歴史の中心であり、前進する人類の先頭に立っている。
「かつて進軍したすべての軍隊と、かつて組織されたすべての海軍、かつて開催されたすべての議会
と、かつて権力を振るいながら統治したすべての王様たちの影響力のすべてを合わせて一つにしても
、人類の生活に与えた影響、人々のいのちに与えた影響の偉大さにおいて、あの『ひとりの孤独な生
涯』には到底及びもつかなかった。」と言っても決して誤りではないだろう。

　バークレーは「これはイエスの生涯のまことに美しい描写である」としている。

ONE SOLITARY LIFE

Here is a man who was born of Jewish parents in an obscure village, the child of a peasant
woman. He grew up in another obscure village. He worked in a carpenter's shop until he was
thirty, and then, for three years, he was an itinerant preacher.

He never wrote a book, he never held an office, he never owned a home. He never had a
family. He never went to college. He never put his foot inside a big city. He never
travelled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He never did one of these
things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but himself.

He had nothing to do with this world, except the naked power of his manhood. While still a
young man the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of
them denied him. He was turned over to his enemies. He went through the mockery of a
trial.

He was nailed to a cross, between two thieves. His executioners gambled for the only piece
of property he had on earth, while he was dying - and that was his coat. When he was dead
he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave, through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen wide centuries have come and gone, and today he is the centre-piece of the human
race, and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that
all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the
parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not
affected the life of man upon earth as powerfully as has that solitary life.

この英文は、英語の教科書である「PROGRESS」にも載っていたので、ご存知の方も多いであろう。
